I love reading about Larry’s and Sergei’s toys. To this day, visit Googleplex and you may witness one of the world’s richest men rollerblading across the company’s massive Silicon Valley headquarters. Under 40 and worth billions, Page and Brin don’t wear expensive suits and they have shown little or no interest in fast cars. Everything they do - whether it’s search, news or maps is with a focus and a quest to become the premier Internet destination for tools that enhance the experience of all Internet users until now.
After searching the web (using Google of course), I quickly learned how serious the boys and the powers at Google are in getting into the renewable energy sector. Google has already begun a worldwide search for a Director of Green Business Strategy and Operations and several other positions. And when your stock is trading at over $650 a share, who questions the boy wonders. Is this strategy prudent? Only time will tell, however, we must ask ourselves the question whether this is like Michael Dell announcing that Dell will go into the automobile business. Better yet, McDonald’s personal computers anyone?
One veteran Wall Streeter questioned whether Google’s founders’ political objectives are getting in the way of prudent business decisions. Of course, nobody questions these decisions when your stock has made the meteoric rise that Google’s stock has made since 2004. “They all go through growing pains,” he told us.
Google will commit tens of millions of dollars in 2008 to the initiative. Business decision or political decision? Unfortunately, only time will tell.
